Steve Andrew
Steve Andrew surf paintings are showcased on Surfers Art. With his use of bright colours, scrapes, drips and marks Steve’s work is instantly recognisable
As far back as Steve Andrew can remember he has always drawn and painted. If it was raining outside he would be immersed in pens and paint until he could get back outdoors.
At the age of 8 he had a painting displayed at the local museum and art gallery. Steve started surfing in 1980 when at a car boot sale his brother in law saw a hand made wooden surfboard. Someone had been inspired by the film Big Wednesday and tried to make a copy of the Gerry Lopez lighting bolt board.
With the nearest beach 30 minutes away, armed with this crude board and a dive wetsuit top, it was enough to light the spark. As the surf bug gripped him Steve naturally started painting surf art, waves, beaches and seascapes.
On the strength of his paintings and drawing Steve was offered a job as a graphic designer, and started producing designs for many clients in the slowly expanding UK surf industry. During this time he did the first designs that launched the brand Weird Fish.
In 1991 he opened the first surf art related gallery in the UK based in Truro, Cornwall. Recently Steve has just completed some commissions for the Firewire offices in Europe and California and Billabong have used some painted designs for their clothing.
With his use of bright colours, scrapes, drips and marks Steve’s art is instantly recognisable, and can be found in many private collections all over the world.
